Types of Captioning services
Automated Captions
Suitable for open access, where there isn't an individual with a disability participating. Automated captions average only about 50-90% accuracy. To enable automated Zoom captions:
- Open your RU zoom session
- Click CC - Show captions

Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART Captioning) - Zoom Displayed
If you have a student in the class with a disability, please coordinate services with our office. In this option, to enable, our office coordinates with various vendors to provide a human captionist, to transcribe word for word what is spoken. To enable this option:
- Students approved for a CART accommodation must send RADR the link to your zoom session ahead of time.
- The Captionist will join your meeting, and label themselves as Captionist- *Name.
- The professor/host will need to click on the “ ^ “ button above “Show captions.”
- Under “Host Controls” click “Set up Manual Captioner.”
- Under “Enable Manual Captioner” - click “On.”
- Then click “Assign a participant to type captions.”
- The participants list will appear. Find the captionist, (guide mouse over their name) and click the more button that appears to the right.
- Click assign captionist.
Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) - Third Party
Some of our students prefer to have their captions displayed on another device, or tab. To do this they will use another software, like textstream. To Enable:
- Students approved for a CART accommodation must send RADR the link to your zoom session ahead of time.
- The Captionist will join your meeting, and label themselves as Captionist- *Name
The captionist will now listen to your meeting and provide the student captions in an alternative application. You can Watch a demo of StreamText, which is a popular application used by captioners.
Open Captions vs Closed Captions
- Open captions are embedded in a video screen and can NOT be turned on or off. In contrast, closed captions can be toggled on and off via the “CC” button.
- Students with disabilities approved for video captioning are entitled to 99% captioning accuracy.
- Professors may edit their video content via Canvas: How to Edit Closed Captions in Canvas
