Setting up ASL or CART in Zoom

Information for professors

In many cases, depending on how long your class is or the nature of the content matter, the student may be assigned multiple American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters. These individuals utilize signs, facial expressions, and body postures to communicate to the student what is happening during your class. The student will sometimes also use this to communicate to you, through the ASL interpreter.

It is important to note, you should always talk directly to the student, and not their interpreter when communicating with the student.

If you are using Zoom, you do not need to make any adjustments to your zoom set up to allow the ASL Interpreters to communicate with the student other than ensuring you have added their NETID to your course. This will allow them to have access to the Zoom link once the class begins.

Information for Vendors

In many cases, Agencies have professional Zoom accounts. If your agency does not, and you need an account, please reach out to our office. While we understand there are many ways to conduct ASL/Computer Aided Realtime Transcription (CART) during a Live Conference, below is the preferred method by Rutgers.

Getting ready for class

  1. Ensure you have followed the guidelines from our Information for Vendors Providing ASL/CART Services Remotely. This page outlines how to acquire a Guest NETID, so you can be added to the professors LMS.
  2. Once you have been added to the LMS, please ensure you have access to the course, and can find the Zoom Link
  3. Please provide the student with the link to your Personal Zoom room. If there are team interpreters, only one person on the team needs to provide the student with their 'personal' Zoom room information.

On the day of class

  1. Please open your 'personal' zoom room from the desktop app. If you are a team interpreter, please open the one you sent to the student first, from the desktop app.
  2. Open a new tab in your browser and paste the zoom link for the class.
  3. A dialogue box will pop up asking if you would like to utilize the desktop app, click cancel
  4. On the zoom webpage you see, click on the 'connect through the browser app'
  5. It will direct you to a site to fill in your name, please do so and hit join. (Sometimes it also asks to confirm you're not a robot. If you are not a robot, please do this)

Information for Students

Getting ready for class

Prior to class, you should have 2 links:

  • The Zoom link for the course
  • The Zoom link used by the interpreting agency

On the day of the class

  1. Please open the class zoom room from the desktop app.
  2. Open a new tab in your browser and paste the zoom link you were provided by the agency.

You should now have 2 zoom windows running simultaneously, allowing you to adjust the size of each window. Regardless of what happens during the class, your second window with the ASL Interpreters will remain the same.
