Setting up ASL or CART in Zoom

Information for professors

In many cases, depending on how long your class is or the nature of the content matter, the student may be assigned multiple American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters. These individuals utilize signs, facial expressions, and body postures to communicate to the student what is happening during your class. The student will sometimes also use this to communicate to you, through the ASL interpreter.

It is important to note, you should always talk directly to the student, and not their interpreter when communicating with the student.

How to Spotlight an ASL Interpreter?

When teaching via zoom please be sure to Spotlight the ASL Interpreter. See image below.

  • Select the three dots in the top right corner of the ASL Interpreter’s picture.
  • Select “Add Spotlight”

Zoom menu showing 'Add Spotlight' option for highlighting an ASL interpreter.

How to assign an CART Captioner to type captions in zoom?

When teaching via zoom a student may request you assign the captioner to type captions. This can be achieved only by the host of a zoom meeting. See image below.

  • Select the carrot button “ ^ “ above the Show Captions button at the bottom right of the screen.
  • Under Host Controls click “Set up Manual Captioner”.
  • Then click “Enable manual captioner” - ON
  • You may now assign the captioner by going to your participants list and clicking the three dots next to their name. Select “assign to type captions”.

Zoom 'Set Up Manual Captioner' menu with options to enable manual captioning, assign a captioner, or use a third-party service.

Students may also opt to view CART Captions via a stream text viewing link or an alternative caption viewing link. When this method of caption viewing is preferred there is no need to assign the captioner. The student will simply view captions via a new tab on their browser.

Information for Vendors

While we understand there are many ways to conduct ASL/Communication Access Real Time Translation (CART) during a Live Conference, below is the preferred method by Rutgers.

Getting ready for class

  1. Ensure you have followed the guidelines from our Information for Vendors Providing ASL/CART Services Remotely. This page outlines how to acquire a Guest NETID, so you can be added to the professors (LMS) Learning Management System i.e. Canvas.
  2. Once you have been added to the LMS, please ensure you have access to the course, and can find the Zoom Link or have the ASL/CART Specialist provide you with the students personal zoom room.
  3. Please be sure to join the zoom meeting early to set up caption viewing links/be assigned to type captions.
