ACM/AFT Request Process

Getting your books as an Accessible Course Material (ACM)

Students should check the syllabi for each class to review their assigned books. For each book, they should follow these steps:

  1. Check if the book is on Bookshare.
    1. If it is on Bookshare, Download the book. You are done.
    2. If not, proceed to step 2.
  2. Check if the Rutgers Library has the book.
    1. If it has the book, copy the URL to where you found the book. Save the URL somewhere so you can use it as Proof of Ownership (PoO) for  Step 5. Proceed to step 5.
    2. If the Rutgers Library does not have the book, proceed to step 3.
  3. Purchase the book through a store, or private party/friend. If from a store, hold onto the receipt.
  4. Obtain a Proof of Ownership (PoO)
    1. PoO can be shown through any document that shows that the requested book has been bought or received by the student. Such documents include receipts, purchase history page, along with shipping and delivery notices.
      1. If the requested book is purchased privately (i.e. from a friend or classmate), the requester and the person they are purchasing the book from should create a simple receipt including the books information, price, and date of sale. That receipt should be submitted through the ACM Request Form as proof of ownership.
      2. If the requested book is available through any Rutgers library or e-reserves the student should copy and then paste the link in  text field after selecting “Is the book available at any Rutgers University Library?” in the “Proof of Ownership” section of the Form. The student does not have to show that they physically checked out the book is available through the library. You should have already done this in step 2a.
  5. Go to the AFT Request Form
  6. Fill out the  AFT Request Form with the corresponding book information,  other required fields, while providing the Proof of Ownership.
  7. Click “Submit.”

We typically get ACM books to students within 2 weeks on average.  We share these files with students through the file sharing platform, Box. For instructions on setting up Box, refer to the Instruction on setting up your Box account. Please check you student email periodically for a Box folder invitation. Upon accepting, you should have access to your book through Box.
