Faculty Guide to Providing Exam Accommodations

Providing Exam Accommodations in Canvas

If you have a set time limit on your quiz/exam in Canvas, you can provide extra time for individual students through the "Moderate This Quiz" feature.

This includes a tutorial video and resources for moderating quizzes and providing additional attempts.

If the extended time is already set up in Canvas, this will remain when using the Respondus LockDown Browser.

Please note: There are accessibility concerns with Respondus for students using some types of assistive technology. Please connect with the Office of Disability Services if you plan to use this tool.

This page provides a calculator to assist you in determining the length of time needed to meet students' accommodations.

Providing Exam Accommodations In-Person

If it has been determined that the student will take their exam in class, with their accommodations, it is important to follow the below steps.

  1. The student should have already submitted their letter of accommodation, but if they have not, ensure this is done before further discussion of accommodations.
  2. The professor and student should meet and discuss the accommodation and the process of ensuring they are available in the classroom.
    • Maintaining confidentiality is of the utmost importance; therefore, it is best for this to be a scheduled meeting, outside of class time
  3. The professor should ensure that they can adhere to the accommodation and provide an appropriate testing space.
    • A quiet space away from distractions (i.e., ringing phones, copy machines, etc.)
    • Ample time for completion based on the students' extended time needs
  4. Equivalent standards should be applied for all students.
    • Proctoring requirements should be the same (i.e., use of items such as calculators or scrap paper, exam broken into sections, etc.)
  5. Remember: the Office of Disability Services is available to help!
    • Each student's coordinator is listed on their letter of accommodation and will be the best point of contact for any questions

Providing Exam Accommodations through the Office of Disability Services (ODS)

  1. The student should have already submitted their letter of accommodation, but if they have not, ensure this is done before further discussion of accommodations.
  2. The student must submit an exam request form to their campus ODS.
  3. The professor will submit their exam to ODS, no less than 1 business day before the exam through the online submission form, or by dropping it off at the office.
    • When submitting the exam, be sure to include all proctoring instructions and a contact number in case there are questions during the exam.
    • You will receive a confirmation once this has gone through.
  4. Once completed, ODS will return the exam to the professor either by email or by another predetermined arrangement.
